This Saturday’s event proved to be a fitting finale to the club’s 2019 schedule. The weather was chilly as befitting a late fall night, while the almost full moon lent its light to the participants for much of the evening. While the mass start for the score event was delayed for a few minutes to accommodate late arrivers and a technical timing matter, as well as making sure it really was dark, finishers were seen to be perspiring freely on their return to the Nature Center at the Park to enjoy the refreshments and compare route choices.
20 teams and individuals, totaling 35 participants, took advantage of Mike Avery’s maiden foray into course designing. Several were first-timers, either to an orienteering event or to a Night-O. To a person they were full of praise for the fair but challenging control placements. Kudos to Mike for the work he put into scouting and designing the beginners cross-country and regular score courses. Special recognition should also go to Mike who volunteered to come back the following day to collect controls.
Many thanks should also go to Stark Parks for allowing the club to once again “invade” Quail Hollow, and especially to Trevor Householder for his invaluable help in supporting the event and for opening the Nature Center to those not running the courses so they could stay warm while the participants were out on the courses!
All in all, a wonderful wrap-up to a fun 2019 schedule!
