Results | Classic Orienteering @ Brecksville | Sunday, August 20th

RECAP

Kathy Jo Rufener and Fred Mailey reporting:

Beautiful Weather for Orienteering

We had great weather and a solid turnout at the Brecksville Reservation Meadows Picnic area in the northern part of this wonderful Cleveland Metropark.  Classic cross country courses were available for all levels of skill.  White for beginners through Red for our advanced competitors.  A Brown course was included to give a shorter challenge to those not wanting all of the hills and distance of the advanced Green and Red courses.

This section of the park can be very tricky for navigation with many winding and looping trails.  Deep ravines make for critical route choices on all off trail excursions.  Streams continuously fold back on themselves and can make your head spin.

We had many college students getting their exercise before returning to schools that included MIT, Case Western, and several other fine local institutions.  Also we had visitors from the Boston area enjoying the orienteering challenges in Cleveland.

The Course Designer expresses his apologies for misidentifying control 52 as a spur instead of a re-entrant on the clue sheet.  (Note that if we can assembly the critical number of volunteers for an event’s basic operation, we can use additional people to vet the control positions and documents prior to the event.  Please volunteer and make our events better!) RESULTS | Canoe-O at Walborn Reservoir 2017

RECAP

Sanae Rogers, Event Director for the day, reports:

Who could’ve asked for a better day to have our annual Canoe-O?

The temperature was in comfortable low 80’s, partly cloudy (which gave us nice shade), no rain and no worries about incremental weather. Perfect weather for 2.5 hours of on the water and land.

We had a record breaking 64 participants with total of 37 solos/team (Hooray!) We are so happy to see this event is growing and seeing so many faces coming back each year.

This year’s course was designed by Steve Hendrix. Unlike last 2 years, there was no mystery controls hidden, which made for easier to plan routes for the orienteers.

As number of participants increased, the competition became tougher. The top 3 kayak soloists were able to bag all 30 controls, with Phillip Wadsworth and Mark Vernon (Rand Orienteering Club), doing it in 125 and 131 minutes respectively.

Stephen Johnson remained undefeated champ 3 years in a row, finishing in 104 minutes.

The top 3 Team kayaks were also able to collect all controls. Renee & Mike Whittenberger came in 3rd, behind Cynthia & Erik Usis, with Brad Lohiser & Jennifer Robinson winning the category. Although 10 points were lost as penalty, Jay Williams became the top canoeing soloist. In Canoeing teams, we saw Amy Frank-Hensley & Sean Hensley as repeated campions, who also collected them all.

Special thanks to Trevor Householder and Nick Pfeiffer from Stark County Parks. Without them, this event would have not been as successful and enjoyable as we did. They provided enough boats (they even stopped boat rental at the store until our event started), volunteered as registrar, patrolled with their boat during the event to make sure everybody was OK, and even collected controls at the end!

Hope all enjoyed and we will see you next year!

HEADS UP!

We have one lost compass. If you think it’s yours, please show up at next event (August 19th at Brecksville)

RESULTS | Cross Country at Oak Hill on July 2nd, 2017

Mark Stypczynski, Event Director, reports from Oak Hill:

While temperatures were in the low to mid 80’s under a mostly sunny sky, a westerly breeze along with the mostly shaded courses designed by Andreas Johansson made for a delightful day of orienteering at the Oak Hill trailhead.

We were visited by Mark and Esther Vernon from South Africa, (from Rand Orienteering Club) who not only participated in the event, they stayed to collect controls, as well.

Also, December 29-January 3rd is the Big 5 O Week in South Africa, with five orienteering events, including two world ranking events. Sanae Rogers has the info and keep in mind that the event is in their summertime.

Learn more here on their Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/RandOrienteeringClub/

It was also Mora Meluch‘s birthday, so her family treated her to a day in the woods. How better to celebrate? All tolled, we had 37 participants and 37 returned. I’m so happy when it works out that way!

VOLUNTEERS & STAFFING

A huge thanks to the following volunteers:

Andreas Johansson – course design and setting. We had nine courses, including the big star and little star (some patriotic flavor for the day) and two trail runs, in addition to the five standard colors. Also, Andreas provided our instruction to new participants for the day.

Karen Steckner – starter and control collector.

Todd Pownell, Andrew Meluch, and the previously mentioned Karen Steckner, Esther and Mark Vernon-control collectors.

RESULTS | Kenston Sprint + Woods Mix, Sunday May 21, 2017

With rain in the forecast, but no clouds in sight in the early morning, we prepared fun, but challenging courses on the Kenston Campus and surrounding woods.

All courses included a mix of both traditional “in the woods” orienteering, with sprint elements on the open campus.

Andreas Johansson (Event Director, Course Designer, Setter) started around 9AM to set controls and to get things ready. And then the rain started! Continue reading “RESULTS | Kenston Sprint + Woods Mix, Sunday May 21, 2017”

Results | Classic Orienteering @ Sippo Lake | Sunday May 14

Bob Turanchik, Event Director, reports…

Perfect weather was the backdrop at a beautiful location for our Mother’s Day Classic-O event at Sippo Lake Park in Stark County. A number of Moms came out to enjoy the day. Sanae Rogers and her husband, Chris, celebrated by both volunteering and navigating. Sanae did all this after she spent the previous day and evening on an intercontinental flight. Great job!
