Recap

Another great weather day in NE Ohio

Mother Nature was cooperating with our two day event.  The first day featured public and Scout Orienteering.  All levels of courses (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) were available to the public at Camp Manatoc, the Boy Scout Camp in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  A portion of the Beginner and Intermediate courses were also used for the North Eastern Ohio Scout Orienteering Championships (NOSOC).

The turnout was great from both the public and from the scouts (many of whom were camping out that weekend).

All scouting units (Cubs, Webelos, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, Girl Scouts, with their adult leaders) learned and practiced map and compass skills. Many troops work on orienteering related badge requirements.  John Naizer and company used the Yellow  course for Orienteering CampOree activities.

The day was capped off by an exciting short Night Orienteering Score course.

Information about our ongoing Scout programs are available here.

RECAP

Kathy Jo Rufener and Fred Mailey reporting:

Beautiful Weather for Orienteering

We had great weather and a solid turnout at the Brecksville Reservation Meadows Picnic area in the northern part of this wonderful Cleveland Metropark.  Classic cross country courses were available for all levels of skill.  White for beginners through Red for our advanced competitors.  A Brown course was included to give a shorter challenge to those not wanting all of the hills and distance of the advanced Green and Red courses.

This section of the park can be very tricky for navigation with many winding and looping trails.  Deep ravines make for critical route choices on all off trail excursions.  Streams continuously fold back on themselves and can make your head spin.

We had many college students getting their exercise before returning to schools that included MIT, Case Western, and several other fine local institutions.  Also we had visitors from the Boston area enjoying the orienteering challenges in Cleveland.

The Course Designer expresses his apologies for misidentifying control 52 as a spur instead of a re-entrant on the clue sheet.  (Note that if we can assembly the critical number of volunteers for an event’s basic operation, we can use additional people to vet the control positions and documents prior to the event.  Please volunteer and make our events better!) Bob Turanchik, Event Director, reports…

Perfect weather was the backdrop at a beautiful location for our Mother’s Day Classic-O event at Sippo Lake Park in Stark County. A number of Moms came out to enjoy the day. Sanae Rogers and her husband, Chris, celebrated by both volunteering and navigating. Sanae did all this after she spent the previous day and evening on an intercontinental flight. Great job! What a beautiful day to be in the woods!  This was our last event of 2016 and conditions were perfect. It was sunny with temperatures in the lower 60’s.

The main course, designed by Mark Stypczynski, was a SCORE style challenge.  You had 90 minutes to amass as many points as you can. Controls vary in point value, so strategy was important!.  Controls farther away or more difficult to find had higher point values.  Stiff penalties were imposed by the Event Director for those who when over the time limit, 10 points were subtracted for each minute over 90.

We had visitors from the Quantico Orienteering Club (QOC, DC area) and the Western PA Orienteering Club (WPOC).  Jonathan Campbell (QOC) took top honors in the Score course clearing all of the controls in 51 minutes.  Yaki Barak (WPOC) was also among the 9 who where able to clear the field in under 90 minutes. Thanks for visiting. Hopefully, we did not miss any other visiting club members. If so let us know.  We always enjoy having new folks checkout our different venues.

We could not have done it without our great team of volunteers:

  • Course Designer & Setter: Mark Stypczynski
  • Registrar: Kevin Peterca
  • Starter : Fran Kern
  • Greeters: Brad Lohiser and Jen
  • Control Collectors: Frank Mahne, Steve Johnson, Richard Davies, Fred Mailey
  • Event Director: Richard Davies (doing double duty after just directing the Quail Hollow Night-O also)

Recap

It was a great night for Orienteering.  Clear sky, some stars, no rain.  And a little chill in the air.

The cross country style courses, designed by John Rasinski, provided challenges for all levels.  Green, Orange, Yellow, and White courses were enjoyed by all.  Our start and finish were at the gazebo, just east of the nature center:

Race Results / Kenston XC / Campus Sprint / Saturday 20 August

Recap

Thank you to Andreas Johansson for once again inviting orienteering to the Kenston Schools campus and for pushing through his post-Lyme disease malaise to design, set and act as co-event director for the day.  We’d like to thank the other volunteers, Karen Steckner (starter/control collector), Guy Russ (registration/control collector), Fred Mailey (control collection), Bob Boltz (control collection), Sanae Rogers (control collection).  As always, we cannot conduct any events without volunteers like you.  So thank you.

The day was a warm, late summer day –at times cloudless and a bit humid but with something of a regular breeze, as demonstrated by the wind turbine that hummed steadily overheard.  The “track,” as Mark Stypczynski would say, was a bit moist in spots in the woods –a testament to the recent spate of rain that also served to green everything.  In these formidable conditions, four courses were offered: a Scout designed and set White Course; an Orange, Green and a Red course.  With the exception of the White course, each course borrowed liberally from common controls.  And, because of the confined area, courses also contained multiple crisscrosses –a feature that can contribute to the fun as participants can encounter each other racing to controls from all different directions, affording numerous ‘Hi’s and Bye’s.’ as orienteers skirt past.  And to keep participants guessing, even in tight quarters between controls, the general positioning of flags was low.  So you could occasionally be very near a control and not see it until you saw distinctly the land feature intended.  All in all, very well done.  We just wish more folks had come out to enjoy it.  But don’t worry… we’ll be back on the Kenston campus.  I can feel it.

Finally, there was one ‘Oops’ in the course setting –the boulder feature at #35.  Some got it and some didn’t.  But it was decided everyone should be credited with the control for giving it the old college try.

See you soon in the woods!

Co-event Director, Howard Montgomery

Race Results / North Chagrin SCORE / Morning / Sunday August 14, 2016

Recap

Under threatening skies and with the temperature in the high 70’s and humidity in the high 80’, the inaugural morning score event was held at North Chagrin Reservation. Sanae Rogers, with assistance from Howard Montgomery, designed and set a challenging intermediate score course and an advanced score course. While no one cleared either course in 90 minutes, a good time was had by all.

Thanks to all of our volunteers: Tam Delorme (first time volunteer), who acted as greeter, registrar, starter, and control collector, and our crew of control collectors: Todd Pownell, Bob Turanchik (who just could not get enough time in the woods-Bob did the advanced course, went out for a half hour on the intermediate course, and collected controls),  and Steve Johnson.
