Recap

At the beginning of this week, the weather forecast was 50-60% chance of rain in the morning, but (everybody must have been good boys & girls) it kept delaying.  And we could enjoy beautiful morning at a beautiful park.  The humidity was a little high, though, it gave runners a little tough time.  As entry level event director, I am personally pleased that I could serve cold drinks when participants came back all sweaty and red faced. ☺

Usually, a Score event uses same map for everybody.  But, our thoughtful and considerate course designer, Howard Montgomery decided to have entry level course for newbies.  (so they don’t get overwhelmed by a big map with bunch of difficult controls.)

Course designer’s note:

The entry level course, called the Novice, included 16 controls —both on trail and a short distance into the woods.  It was constructed to be cleared.  320 points total.

The competitive course, the Full Scramble, contained 31 controls that were spread across all quadrants of the park.  Because of the small acreage, combined with the score-style, most every control attack could be approached as a sprint unless the participant consciously designed her own long leg out of the landscape of controls she could select.  Multiple course clearings was anticipated. (editor’s note: but it didn’t happen on the Full Scramble).  800 points total.

I did not necessarily value the furthest, hardest controls with the highest point values in all cases.  This was on purpose.  If you’ve ever watched a child find a fifty pointer or a couple of friends on their first time do the same, then you understand.   😉

We had total 28 team/individual with 37 participants.

Note: some total scores reflect additional points due to Orienteers punching controls not on their course.  This has been corrected in a few cases when the individual or team pointed out their extra punch(es) to the staff.   The remaining extra punches will be left “as is”.  Giving people credit for what they found.  But note this is not standard practice.  In the future, the scoring software will be updated to eliminate any extra punches.
