Results | NOSOC -NE Ohio Scout Orienteering Championship | Camp Tuscazoar | Saturday Sept 8

Recap

The remnants of Gordon visited, dampening the air and the ground, but not the enthusiasm of about 70 participants loaded with scouting spirit, and a desire to learn and develop their orienteering skills. Units from the Buckeye, Great Trail, & Lake Erie Councils attended. Right after breakfast, most of the participants took advantage of a training class taught by NEOOC President Howard Montgomery, assisted by NEOOC veteran KJ Rufener.

Tough morning practice courses insured plenty of opportunities to work a map, especially for those who would be coming back for the afternoon Championships. Scouts explored the area surrounding the Neta-Wat-Wes Brook from all sides, including historic Pioneer’s Point. Those on Orange passed through the tunnel, and dropped down multiple times to find controls along the Brook level. All the while, Gordon kept the rain coming.

During the lunch break, NEOOC members Bob Boltz, Fred Mailey, Howard, and KJ collected the morning controls, and carefully re-set them for the afternoon. Those craving more time in the woods, despite Gordon’s constant presence, gathered for the Championships under the protective cover of Tom’s Chapel at 2:30. Every three minutes, competitors were unleashed on each course until they were all in the field. The courses ran parallel to White Eyes Brook, turning north, and then east, and then crossed over Boy Scout Road, where orienteering continued for the first time ever on the trails along the easternmost area of the Camp, finishing at Stone Lodge. While competitors caught their breath, enjoyed snacks, and exchanged anecdotes about route selection and control locations, the crack staff of Rob Donaldson, Tom Helm, and Nick Marsh checked scores and tabulated results.

MMMMM (Cole Kirby & Sid Austin) from 241 won the White course, over the second place tandem of Cavemen (Jacob Moff & Curtis Summers) from 262. Gordon Mahoney & Elliot Rodgers of 241 finished first on Yellow, ahead of Frosted Flakes (Nick Rohde & Jackson Kostura), also of 241. Patrick Nudo won the adult Yellow. The Orange course proved even more challenging due to the never-ending rain, adding luster to a winning time of 99 min. 59 secs. by the Blue Fox (aka Dillon Hart & Nick Zangas) of 338. Winners received their choice from a selection of special pocketknives.

The day was made complete by the Pig Gig’s awesome meal!
