Richfield Rocks!

or

 NEOOC Rocks Richfield!

 Or

 Orienteering Rocks!

Well, something was rocking in the Richfield Heritage Preserve.  Whatever the name of this classic event was, we had a good time.  Over 50 people got out on one (or more) on the five cross country courses that highlighted (or low lighted) over 30 rocks throughout the 366 acre park.  And, on top of all that, all can feel proud to have taken part in World Orienteering Day in Northeast Ohio!  Worldwide, there have been over 32,000 participants in 242 registered events in 50 countries!  And still counting!

The afternoon started with recognition and presentations to our 2020-21 NEOOC Club Champions.  Club President Howard Montgomery and the program originator/director, Mike Avery presented awards to:

KJ Rufener – Advanced Female Dave Kostansek – Advanced Male
Lauren Woolum – Intermediate Female Dan Vaughn – Intermediate Male
Kathy Christy – Beginner Female Wyatt Johnson – Beginner Male Co-Champ

Michael Tylicki – Beginner Male Co-Champ

Congratulations to these fine orienteers!

The 2022 Club Championship is underway now, it is voluntary and free.  Click the link to check out how you are fairing.

Following the awards, orienteers started rocking out on the five courses created from 35 controls.  In total, 643 rocks (controls) were found by “runners” traversing over 235 km (straight line).  Quite an accomplishment on a surprisingly hot spring day.  The heat definitely increased the difficulty level on all the courses, but the “Mega Red Rocks” runners looked especially happy to have survived, whoops, I mean finished.  Quite a few of you took advantage of the great day and ran multiple courses.  That’s great, we love to see members enjoying our courses.  Whenever possible, we always encourage you to do multiple courses (no extra fee, but event director must approve).

In talking with you, the hardest segments seemed to be the east west crossing legs:  Yellow 10-11, Orange 3 -4, and Red 6 -7.  To see some of these segments , check out the live links replays in Livelox.

Thanks again for coming out and enjoying a great local park.  Glad you all had fun. We have a lot of event photos posted on our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/NEOOrienteering.  By the way, don’t worry about next year’s courses, Todd has already been out in the park looking for more rocks.
