The highlight of day were the five courses of first-time course designer, Bob Turanchik, who provided an appreciative gathering with a White, Yellow, Orange, Green and Red courses. Everything was spot on and inviting of discussions about route choices —the successful residue of fulfilling orienteering courses. Unfortunately, Bob could not be with us to accept the plaudits for this handiwork, he had a conflicting obligation today (he set the course Friday evening).
As forecast, the weather was sunny to partly cloudy the entire day and ranged between the lower and upper fifties. The track was wet in many places but only muddy in a few —particularly slopes that put more than one or two participants on their bum.
As for participants, the event attracted 17 registrations and 40 total competitors —a respectable showing. What was exciting was the number of new orienteers who participated, 20! This is a testament to the fine support and advertising we get from the Stark Parks, which activates new souls to try our activity. We saw similar success the week earlier at an Orienteering for Beginners event that they hosted and we instructed at the Sippo Lake Clubhouse that was once again virtually standing-room only. Oh if we had such a relationship with Cleveland Metroparks.
