Recap

On a wet, cool, and dark Devils Night, over 40 orienteers returned to Richfield Heritage Preserve for a fun and competitive event. The past week’s rain accelerated the leaf fall and created challenging conditions in parts of the park.  Howard’s courses were designed with these challenges at hand and had many lights moving in many directions.  This was one event where you could not follow the light in front of you.  Night events add complexity even to familiar parks and venues.

Overall, the courses were more treat than trick and we didn’t lose anyone (always the sign of a good event,  LOL).  Connie, Marcia, and Joe from Team Mauter were first off the start followed by a many of the Wackos (whoops, I mean the runners on the Wacko course).  The Wacko course was highly competitive, busy, and impacted the final standings for the NEOOC 2020-21 Season Championship (will be updated shortly).  It was good to see many of these runners two weeks in a row, I think some of them are already looking for a course next weekend.

A couple of participant notes.  We had a number first timers, thanks to Jess (good job remembering your basic LandNav) and Brian, the Vrabecs and Amanda for joining us.  We plan on seeing you again. Jonathan and Todd ran competitively on Wacko this weekend after hosting last week’s Sunny Lake event.  (Thanks again to Jonathan for that entire venue.)  Sandra took a break from sanding her floors to run Wacko, hopefully Richfield was more fun.  A special thanks to Rich Davies for joining us on his wedding anniversary, not sure how many of us could/would do that.

Volunteers to thank.  Abbey’s mother for babysitting so she and Ryan could run the course.  Howard for his course design /set, park liaison duties, and OFB.  Fred and Mike for web, technical, and scoring support. Dave Kostansek for clearing and collection.  Last of all, my wife thanks all of the participants for getting me out of the house on Saturday night.
