Classic-O | Fry Family Park – Stark County | Saturday, May 8th, 2021

Overview

The Fry Family Park is a very open and beautiful area, full of rolling hills and looping trails.  Its a great place to practice Orienteering.  Howard Montgomery has designed a set of challenging courses for this park that will match your skill level, from Novice to Expert.  Richard Davies will serve as our Event Director.  These courses will ONLY be available for one day, May 8th.

This event can easily be paired with the Self Serve event at Camp Tuscazoar that is available starting the same day and going for 9 days total. Camp Tuscazoar is about 15 minutes from Fry Family Park.

Results of this event will count towards the NEOOC 2020-21 Season Championship.

Details

This will be a socially distancing event with a limited number of Starts. Those individuals and teams that register on this webpage or at the Stark County webpage will be accommodated via a set of different time slots to ensure minimal contact between groups.

To participate, you are required to preregister and prepay for one of the available time slots provided.  The time slot represents the time you are allowed to approach registration area and check in.  It is NOT your exact start time.  Please do not approach the the check-in area early.  And if you are late by more than 10 minutes, your are disqualifying yourself from the opportunity to orienteer that day.  However, you can wait until 12:30pm when will try to create Starts for 3 to 4 additional groups.  Though, these can not be walk-ups.

If you arrive at the park early, please use the time to prepare yourself for your run on the course by changing into your gear and by completing your warm-up routine.  It will be ideal if you can move immediately to the start area after your check in.

A Start is an individual or group starting the same course at the same time.  The group can be up to six people and is required to be part of your COVID-19 cohort or pod.  One map is provide for the Start.  Up to two additional maps can purchased at the time of preregistration.

If you have more than six in your group, you must split into two groups.  Bring your own water and snacks.  None will be provided at the Check in, Start, or Finish areas.  Also, no water stops will be available on the courses.

Courses

Four courses will be available:

  • Novice (11 controls, length: 3.0 km, 100m climb)
  • Orange (12 controls, length: 3.6 km, 120m climb)
  • Green (10 controls, length: 3.9 km, 125m climb)
  • Red (12 controls, length: 5.4 km, 180m climb)

For the Season Championship, results achieved in this event will be mapped into the Season Championship skill categories (Male and Female) as follows:

  • Novice results will go to the Beginner skill categories
  • Orange results will go to the Intermediate skill categories
  • Green and Red results will go to the Advanced skill categories

If Season Championship points are important to you, please select your course for this event accordingly.

Time Slots

A total of 36 Time Slots are available people who register through this site.  The courses are spread across the Time Slots as follows:

Novice  – 11:10am, 11:10am, 11:25am, 11:30am, 11:45am, 12:00pm

Orange – 10:55am, 11:05am, 11:20am, 11:30am, 11:45am, 11:55am, 12:10pm, 12:20pm, 12:25pm, 12:30pm

Green – 10:50am, 11:00am, 11:20am, 11:25am, 11:35am, 11:50am, 12:00pm, 12:10pm, 12:15pm, 12:25pm

Red – 10:50am, 10:55am, 11:00am, 11:05am, 11:35am, 11:50am, 11:55am, 12:15pm, 12:20pm, 12:30pm

Determine the course that you want to do based on how far you want to run, and where you want your results to reflect in the Season Championship, if that is important to you.  On the registration form, select the course in the pull down.  Only one course selection per group or individual is permitted.  This will allow the maximum amount of participation for this event.

We may need to adjust the Time Slots listed above according to the demand for a particular course, but we are sticking to the 36 Time Slots total, overall.  Registration will be closed after 36 Time Slots are filled.

Then, based on your course selection, select your first and second preferred Time Slots.   Note that neither is guaranteed, but we will try to accommodate the requests to the best of our abilities.  We will send you your assigned Time Slot via the email address that you provide on the form.  Emails will be sent about three days before the event (or earlier).  (Check your SPAM or JUNK folder before contacting us, if you believe we have not notified you.  Especially, @hotmail.)

Registration and Cost

One Start is $11 and includes one map.  Additional maps, up to two, are $3 each. This is our normal member event fee ($10), with a small offset added to compensate for PayPal fees.  To simplify payments, the same fee is being charged to members and non-members.

After submitting your information on the registration form, you will be directed to the PayPal website.  Use the PayPal pull down to select the number of maps.

Note that we are using PayPal exclusively to handle the funds exchange to help minimize contact with the Check-in volunteers.

Instructions

Enter Fry Family Park via the main entrance off of Farber St. SE.  Then proceed to the large parking area adjacent to the Picnic Shelter up the hill.  There will be Orienteering signs along the roads to direct you.

At your assigned Time Slot, please approach the Check-in area, located in the shelter just to the South of the parking area.  If you are running as a team, please send only one representative to check your group in.  At Check-in, you will receive your SportIdent Finger Stick (if you are borrowing one).  Then you will be directed to the separate Start area where you will receive your map(s) immediately after punching the Start control.

Please take care to wear your masks at and around the Check-in area, map exchange, Start and Finish, and take care to avoid congregating with others that are not part of your group.  After finishing, near the shelter, please proceed directly back to your vehicle.  Results will be posted to our website the following day.
