Event Details

  • A participant’s overall score will consist of the sum of two components:
    • Orienteering Score – 1 point per control visited, for a maximum of 24 points for a cleared course
    • Poker Score – Determined by the value of the participant’s poker hand.  See “Hand Value” column in the table below
  • Prior to the start, each participant receives a score format map and 5 playing cards.  Visit the controls in any order.
  • Each control will have a plastic tub with one, two or three playing cards.
  • After the mass start, the participant proceeds to a control where they can exchange one or more cards in the attempt to produce a winning poker hand. You can visit the same control more than once (no Orienteering points after the first visit) as long as you have visited another control before you revisit the original one.
  • There will be no jokers or other wild cards in play.
  • The participant can never have more than five cards in their possession.
  • There will be a number of poker hand ranking charts at the start, but if you are unfamiliar with the poker hand rankings, there is a table below, under Additional Information.  Also, it is suggested that you do a Google search to gain this valuable knowledge!
  • When the participant is confident in their Orienteering Score and poker hand, they can return to the finish to have their time recorded. Orienteering Score, followed by time if needed, are the tie breakers!  There is a 75-minute time limit for this event.
  • Participants who are late to the finish will earn a deduction of 1 point from their Orienteering Score per each full minute late.
  • FULL SIZE control flags will be in use
  • Livelox will be active for this event.  Sign in to the Livelox app on your smartphone to record your route directly to Livelox, or record it on your Garmin or other GPS tracker, and upload it to Livelox later.  Check out this short video for a demo of route replays in Livelox.

Additional Information

In the table below is a ranking of poker hands, highest to lowest.

* Five of a kind is not possible in a normal game of poker, however for our game multiple decks will need to be shuffled together to accommodate the anticipated number of participants and cards for the controls.  So five of a kind will be a possible hand in our game.

2022 Season Championship

  • Since there is only one course, runners will need to indicate their skill classification during preregistration where they would like to have their points recorded.

Pre-registration (RSVP)

PRE-REGISTRATION – Use link above!

Pre-registration has been extended to Noon on Friday, August 5, so we know how much food to prepare has closed.  Currently we’re at 34 starts and there are room for 6 more, first come, first served.  Anyone walking up after we reach 40 starts is welcome to stay and help with control collection.
