Update

Flags have been set and the iOrienteering, UsynligO and Livelox apps are ready for your attack on the Camp Butler courses, starting tomorrow, Jan 8 at 9:00am!

As mentioned, please sign in and out at the Director’s Cabin before starting and after ending your time in the Camp.  We have been advised that the Camp Rangers may be gone after around 10:30 on Sunday, so if you find the office locked when you arrive on Sunday mornings, go ahead and proceed with your runs.

Here are the details to get logged into the apps:

  • iOrienteering
    • NEOOC_2022_Butler_Pivot-O_Orange – short code gGzJC9
    • NEOOC_2022_Butler_Pivot-O_Green – short code PYzoFa
    • NEOOC_2022_Butler_Pivot-O_Red – short code l7z8i3 (1st char lower case L)
    • For any of these, scan the course setup QR code on the map, or enter the course short code (requires an internet connection)
  • UsynligO and Livelox
    • Event is 2022 Pivot-O Self-serve – Camp Butler
    • Classes are orange, green and red

Overview

Join your fellow orienteers in making a quick pivot from the planned Poker-O to a self-serve event that has been arranged for your early Winter orienteering pleasure.  This event will feature classic courses that have been designed to provide fun and challenge for all.

Similar to previous self-serves, we will be using the iOrienteering and UsynligO apps for electronic timing on your smart phone.  However, all of the courses can be enjoyed without the Tech, by logging the key words on the marker flags as a backup for the apps.   There is no need to touch the control flags.

Also, we suggest starting a stopwatch or keep track of your own time by some means, so that you can manually enter your results if needed.

Camp Usage and Guidelines

TELL SOMEONE WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND WHEN YOU EXPECT TO RETURN.  SAFETY FIRST!      (see Sanae’s location sharing idea below)

CAMP PHONE NUMBER IS 330-657-2422.  If it is an extreme emergency, call for first responders (911) as a first priority, then call the camp office.

CAMP STAFF MUST KNOW WHO IS IN THE CAMP AT ALL TIMES.  ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SIGN IN AND OUT WITH THE CAMP MASTER AT THE DIRECTOR’S CABIN!  The Camp Master is normally gone by around Noon on Sundays, so participation on Sunday afternoons will be on the honor system.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ON SUNDAYS, CAMP STAFF PLAN TO PADLOCK THE MAIN GATE AT STREETSBORO RD AT 5:00PM.  Hopefully you don’t have to do this, but if you find yourself locked in, you can exit the Camp by taking Inter-Camp Road west from the Director’s Cabin to Scoutcraft Way/Bt St 1 over to Camp Manatoc, where you can exit on Truxell Rd.  Zoom and pan the Google Map embedded at the bottom of this page to see the route

Here are our thoughts and guidelines for these Classic-O courses:

  • Do this as individuals only or in your cohort.  As part of your essential exercise program, while maintaining social distancing.
  • At your option, you can use the iOrienteering Phone App, UsynligO Phone App, or record your own time for later self reporting on the webpage
  • The Start and Finish (QR codes that need to be scanned for iOrienteering) to be located in or near the Camp Office
  • For these Classic-O courses, the idea is to find them in the specified order (Start -> 1 -> 2 -> … -> Finish).
  • But plan a specific amount of time for your course.  Find as many control flags-markers as you can, in the time that you have planned.  It can be one hour or up to three hours.  It’s up to you.
  • If you are having trouble finding a particular control flag, skip it.  No problem.
  • Have fun and get some exercise.  Do not over do it.  Know your limits.  Consult your Healthcare provider for guidance as needed.
  • Time limit of 3 hours.  Once the clock starts, it keeps going, no time off for breaks.
  • For self timing, record the Key word from each control flag-marker you find.  Use the sheet included on the map.  Bring your own pen!   –  “No-Touch”
  • Or use the iOrienteering Phone App to record the control flags found.  This app uses the QR codes attached to each flag and at the Start/Finish areas, see the details in this document:  iOrienteering Instructions.  –  “No-Touch”
  • AND, at your option, you can email your GPS file as an attachment to:  mike@neooc.com ——- And we will upload to LiveLox for this Event!
  • Courses are also available via UsynligO.  Send your splits and/or track to mike@neooc.com  via the App’s sharing functions
  • Pack a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.  Make a day of it.   Email questions to contact@neooc.com.

Fee for Self-serve Pivot-O

  • Did you know that for each self serve start, the club has to pay for insurance as a fee to the national O-USA organization?  Also, sometimes we have to pay a facility or permitting fee for the club’s use of the particular park.
  • For Club Members,  please pay $11 for each group or individual participating via PayPal (1 to 6 people):

Event Closed

  • For non-Members,  please pay $16 for each group or individual participating via PayPal (1 to 6 people):

Event Closed

Pay one of these fees for the use of any or all of the Maps listed in the section below by that paying individual or group.

Courses and Maps

The map used for these courses is an 1 : 6000 scale Orienteering map and was created by NEOOC’s Bob Boltz.

Three courses will be available.  Download as many courses as you plan to run, using the links below:

*A Yellow Course follows the trails in the park, but requires short off-trail excursions to find many of the controls.

For the map page included in each download, use landscape mode for the printout on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper.   We added the separate Map Legend PDF file (print this one in portrait mode) because we needed to allow for overlays (like QR codes, clues, etc.) which were written over the legend OR cropping that may have eliminated the legend.

Phone App

The iOrienteering Phone App  uses QR codes mounted on the control flags and at the Start and Finish.  This strives to make the course completely “no-touch”.  Here is an example of the course setup QR code on the map that must be scanned first:

Results

NEOOC has setup a webpage to self report your results:

Self Report Your Results

Or send an email to mike@neooc.com indicating your team name, course, number of controls found and total time.  This is completely on the honor system.   Have fun!

If you used the iOrienteering App, just upload when you are finished and we will process your results into the Results list below.

We encourage you to report your results, even if you did not get all of the controls!  (Just enter your team name, the number of controls found, and approximate time taken to complete your course, all on the webpage.  Easy!)

Your results will be added to the Results list below once we have transferred the information properly.  It may take a little while.

Sanae’s location sharing idea:

I found neat function in Google Map. It’s called “location sharing”. You can turn the function on with your family or friend and let them know you will be in the woods and approx. how long, or by when you will be back.
If something happens on you, they will know your location and call rescue or come find you ☺
