90-Minute Score | Annual Club Meeting

Join the Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club for some winter exploring at Sunny Lake Park. This year’s event features a 90-minute score course beginning at the Moebius Nature Center.

Your challenge is to locate as many control flags as you can within the time limit using a map and compass. Come on your own or team up with friends or family.

After the score event, warm up with hot cocoa, coffee, donuts, and snacks, and stay for our annual meeting. We’ll look ahead to the coming year, share plans for local and regional events, talk about volunteer roles and ways to get involved, and elect a new board of directors.

Location:

Moebius Nature Center
929 E. Mennonite Rd
Aurora, OH 44202

Note that the Moebius Nature Center and parking is east of the main Sunny Lake park entrance.

Course Details:

This will be a score event. Visit as many controls as possible – in any order – within the 90-minute time limit.

Each control location will be assigned a point value based on the tens digit in the control code. Controls 110-119 will be worth 10 points, Controls 120-129 will be worth 20 points, and so on. Rankings will be based on total score with tie breakers going to the fastest time.

Participants that finish after their respective cutoff time will be subject to a point penalty of 10 points per minute late.

Teams of up to 6 are allowed, however all team members must stay together throughout the duration of the event.

Map Notes:

The Sunny Lake map was first used in 2021 and has since undergone minor updates, primarily to remove small features that no longer meet current IOF mapping standards.

Sunny Lake itself is a 68-acre lake encircled by a 1.75-mile paved walking trail. The park’s northeast corner includes a disc golf course; tee pads are shown with the small paved-area symbol, and baskets are marked with the “o” disc-golf symbol.

Cultivated farmland appears on the map as yellow with black dots. During the growing season these areas may contain soybean or corn crops and are off-limits.

The park is relatively flat, so 2.5-meter contours are used (instead of the standard 5-meter interval) to better depict subtle terrain changes.

A network of trails totals just over six miles. The trail density is high enough to support an annual 50k race in which runners complete five loops. At times—especially in fall or winter—some single-track trails may be obscured by leaves or snow. Participants should avoid relying solely on these trails for navigation in such conditions.

Vegetation can become dense in summer, and this is well represented on the map. Poison ivy is widespread throughout the park, especially in summer and fall. Otherwise, the terrain is mostly fast, open forest, and the gentle elevation changes combined with the extensive trail system often allow for quick courses.

As former farmland, the park still contains remnants of old infrastructure. Some areas include partially broken wire fencing, which is mapped accordingly. Participants should use caution around these symbols, as the fencing may be low, hidden, or easy to miss.

About NEOOC:

The Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of orienteering. It is run entirely by volunteers. Typical volunteer roles in need include course setting, control collection, marketing, and event welcome and registration. If you are interested in helping with this event, or any events in the future, please connect with the event director or send an email to volunteer@neooc.com. Thank you in advance!

Additional Information:

  • Make sure to dress for the weather. Long pants and trail running shoes or hiking boots are recommended as a minimum for any weather conditions.
  • Sunny Lake itself may be frozen over but will be forbidden to cross to due to the potential for thin ice.
  • NEOOC volunteers will be on standby at registration to assist beginners and provide some basic instruction.
  • Teams must stay together at all times. Please do not split up while on a course.
  • Please carry a whistle. Three (3) short blasts from a whistle indicates an emergency.
  • All participants must check out at the finish area to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for. This applies even if the course is not fully completed.
