Anniversary Picnic and Score Recap.

We continued our 50th anniversary year celebration with a 60 minute Score and picnic on a new map at a new venue – Chapin Forest Reservation, Lake Metro Parks.  Chapin Forest is a great comination of mature Ohio woodlands, rocks, big rocks, boulders, big boulders, ledges, and overlooks.

A special note of thanks before the results.  Fred Mailey has been leading the Chapin Forest mapping team.  Mike Semick and Christa Petryszyn were/are the primary field checkers.  We thank them for their time and commitment!  Thank you.  We’re still working on this map (as well as other new venues). If you would like to help with mapping or field checking, drop Fred or Jonathan a note.)

Staring at the BIG Yellow chair, over 80 orienteers started the 60 minute score course.  Mike and Christa designed this inagural course with 21 controls through out the western side of the reservation. However, the course had a twist, only 20 controls were printed – a hidden control was revealed on an additional map found out on the course.  Five competitors found all 21 controls and another three found the 20 mapped controls.

After the race, the club hosted our 50th Annviersary Picnic.  During the picnic, club president, Jonathan Boyer recognized the longevity, service, and commitment of our immediate past president, Howard Montgomery.  Howard was presented with Orienteering USA’s Goldern Service Award.  Howard spent the past 20 years  growing and moving orienteering and the club forward.  Thank you Howard!

Before everyone enjoyed the celebration cake, Jonathan had a brief presentation of our club’s history.  He featured highligts, significant past events, and recognized the members who made those events possible. Learn more about our club history here, Our History.  (Thanks to Jonathan and Sarah Wehlan for putting this together).

Our next event will be the Corn Maze Challenge and 2026 Masters Nationals.   Three events over three days in late September. All are welcome to participate – don’t let the name scare you. As part of these events, we will also have self serve courses up from Sept. 19th thru 27th at Girdled Road.  The self serve courses are free and open to everyone! Check Web and FB for more details next month.

We could also use more volunteers, if you can help in any capacity, drop us a note. Volunteer.

Hope everyone had fun!  Thanks to everyone who came out to Chapin Forest and made it a success. Special thanks as always to our volunteers, I tried to list everyone below, but I know I missed some of you – thanks!

Thanks to Lake Metro Parks for sharing this park.  See you next year.
