History

A Brief Introduction

Since 1976, the Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) has introduced thousands of people to the sport of orienteering. Over five decades, dedicated volunteers have created maps, organized hundreds of events, and hosted regional and national championship competitions. This history highlights many of the people, milestones, and accomplishments that shaped the club.

Club Beginnings, 1976-1983

1976

  • Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club founded.
  • First club newsletter published on June 30, 1976.
  • First event held at Hell Hollow Park.
  • Event maps sold for $1.00.
  • Membership dues established at $2.50 for individuals and $5.00 for families.

1977

  • Produced the club’s first color map of North Chagrin Reservation.

1978

  • First two Class B meets held at North Chagrin Reservation and Mill Stream Run.
  • First official club logo introduced.
  • Event schedule expanded to South Chagrin Reservation, Mill Stream Run, and Quail Hollow State Park.
  • Newsletter officially adopted the name The Grapevine, which was published for 28 years until the last known issue in 2006.
  • NEOOC became affiliated with the U.S. Orienteering Federation, later Orienteering USA.

1979

  • Events expanded to Hinckley Reservation.
  • Hosted the club’s third Class B meet as a two-day event.

1980

Hosted the North American Orienteering Championships at Brecksville Reservation, with 391 participants.

1982

  • Events expanded to Kendall Lake.

Late 20th Century, 1984-1999

1986

  • First Night-O held in Cuyahoga Valley.
  • First mapping clinic conducted.

1990

  • Club championship and ranking system introduced.

1991

  • North Chagrin map updated by Anton Kniebugl of Czechoslovakia.
  • Dave Karberg was featured on the cover of Orienteering North America (June 1991).

1992

  • South Chagrin and Mill Stream Run maps updated by visiting mappers from Czechoslovakia.
  • Orienteering featured in Cleveland Magazine (August 1992).
  • First Vampire-O held on Halloween.

1993

  • Hinckley map updated.

1994

  • Ken and Sarah Lappin featured in Shaker Magazine (Nov/Dec 1994).

1995

  • Hosted the two-day Buzzard’s Revenge A-meet.
  • Orienteering featured in the Plain Dealer (April 15, 1995).
  • Orienteering featured in the Chagrin Valley Times (June 22, 1995).
  • An incident at Brecksville Reservation resulted in new restrictions on orienteering within Cleveland Metroparks.

1996

  • Introduced Car-O and Wine-O events.

1997

  • First 50-control Mini-Rogaine.
  • Russian mappers updated the Brecksville map.

1998

  • Hosted the Midwest Championships, Reentrants of Doom.

1999

  • Stanislav Rachitskiy invited to coach the U.S. National Team.
  • Dave Kostansek invited to the U.S. National Team.
  • Retirements created a need for six new officers.

Digital modernization, 2000-2019

2000

  • NEOOC hosted its first rogaine, a six-hour endurance challenge in Cuyahoga Valley.

2002

  • Club leadership launched initiatives to improve volunteer recruitment, membership growth, and mapping expansion.
  • Yefim “Fima” Schtempler of Ukraine helped update and expand the Kendall Lake map

2003

  • Event fees rose from $5 to $8 for non-members and from $3 to $5 for members.
  • Yefim “Fima” Schtempler returned to continue helping with map updates.

2004

  • NEOOC hosted the North American Championships, a two-day event at Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Camp Manatoc. 

2006

  • A back-to-back rogaining weekend was held, with a Cuyahoga Valley event followed by an urban rogaine. 

2007-2009

  • NEOOC began using e-punching for controls.

2017

  • Last known use of Cleveland Metroparks.

Resilience and Renewal, 2020-present

2020

  • Due to COVID protocols, many orienteering events were cancelled or converted to self-serve events. 

2021

  • Inaugural Black Squirrel event at Kent State.
  • First map use at Sunny Lake, Aurora, Ohio.
  • NEOOC introduced its Season Championship competition.
  • Livelox was introduced as a post-event analysis tool.

2024

  • Three days of orienteering were included in the Pan American Masters Games, facilitated by NEOOC volunteers.
  • First map use at The West Woods, Geauga County.
  • First use of Air+ punching.

2025

  • Howard Montgomery was recognized with Orienteering USA’s Golden Service Award.
  • First map use at Girdled Road, Lake County.

2026

  • NEOOC hosts the Orienteering USA Masters Nationals and Corn Maze Challenge.
  • First map use at Big Creek Park, Geauga County.
