Recap
Course designer Fred Mailey had been waiting since September 2018 to challenge those willing to tackle a Mini-Rogaine at the century old Camp Tuscazoar, after last year’s event was postponed by Tropical Storm Gordan. Recent rains caused the Tuscarawas River to spill over onto the lower railroad bed, but the bank holding the upper railroad bed held back the flood, leaving the rest of the Camp available, including the reclaimed Dessecker Mine Complex and the old Zoarite Mine.
The temperature was about 8 degrees above average, peaking at 89, with high humidity, but no rain. 36 controls were in place, ready for an 11 a.m. mass start for most of the 23 individuals or teams participating in the score course. The field was complete when a few stragglers started soon after that. They had 180 minutes (increased from 2½ hours) to try to complete the course, with 1750 points possible. Meanwhile, interspersed among the Rogainers, were six teams or individuals who took on the 10-control White (with a tint of Yellow) course. Altogether, at least 45 orienteers heard Fred’s siren call to explore the Camp’s nooks and crannies, expertly mapped by Bob Boltz.
With the ink barely dry on her registration form, WPOC member Sydney Fisher cleared the course, returning in a mere 101:33. Next to arrive was Kevin Fisher in 124:12. WPOC’s sweep of the top 3 spots was completed with a 137:23 time for Alexis Rzewski. Three NEOOC and CCO teams or individuals also navigated to all 36 controls.
Wyatt Johnson completed the White course in 37:42, with The Leopards coming in next at 60:07, followed by Giuseppina Mecchia clocking in at 73:39.
The returning competitors were greeted with some cheers, and perhaps more importantly, nostalgic and welcome freeze-pops, or brownie sundaes, or both.
