Recap

A beautiful day for sprint orienteering at Kenston Campus offered up fast courses with plenty of opportunity to get turned around. And oh, some pretty hot temperatures to boot!

Event details included a dry campus, with woods and fields that were still wet from rain and drainage. Kenston’s gently sloping campus offers up quick legs for most of the courses there, and then challenges the orienteers with a bit of woods that can be tricky, especially in the spring and summer when foliage is grown up, and very green. See some of the pictures below!

In the sun, temperatures reached 90+F around noon, and with little wind, made the day a bit warm. Many came back soaked in sweat, but happy and excited. There was one water stop on the course, centrally located, that many took advantage of.

Three courses were offered – a short, a long, and an advanced course. Most opted for either the long or advanced, and we advertised on-site as white, orange, and red, respectively. The advanced course featured a large butterfly / bat, with one control being visited four times, from four different directions.

Being a sprint distance / setup, we expected times in the 40s, and weren’t disappointed with Randy Mitchell’s 45:04, Brian Ritchken’s 47:16, and Todd Pownell’s 48:46. Well done to the top three on the advanced course’s 4.7km!

On the long course, 5.3km, we saw Ivan Redinger take first with 81:57, followed by Eric Curts shortly after with 90:14. Well done!

Shelby Jones gets a special mention for running the short course, 2.7km in 28:37, followed by the advanced course in 84:12 – all after having completed the 8km race in Akron previously that morning! Way to go! (as some of you know, she’s training for the Barkley, and we wish her the best of luck!)

Thank you to all the volunteers for making it happen! Registration & setup, and all around expertise by Howard MontgomeryLois Weisbrook and Brian Ritchken handled starts with flair. Daniel & Viktor Bergin helped set controls. Andreas Johansson designed the courses and brought the Oreos… Thanks to Howard, Daniel, and Andreas for picking up controls!
