Recap
On what must have been one of the best days of the year, weather-wise, we saw over 50 participants engage in a rainbow of courses from WHITE (beginner) to the distance intense RUNNER’s course. In between we offered YELLOW, ORANGE, BROWN, GREEN, RED, and even BLUE. Sadly, no takers on BLUE, but if you saw the pre-printed map, you’d understand!
Fred Mailey had as usual done a tremendous job designing and setting all the courses, and provided the appropriate level of challenge for all competitors. A few even returned for more, and did more than one course! With the vegetation at its max for the season, the Kendall Lake area was dense, thicker than usual, and got more than a few veterans turned around at times!
Orienteering is a sport that can be enjoyed by any age level, and at any pace. Of course it’s a race, but at our local meets its more about getting in the woods, engaging the brain, and solving problems. We saw several Scout troops, a few trail runners, and several regular club members in attendance. A competing event in Ellicottville didn’t seem to slow us down at all! The youngest competitor was probably about 6 (with dad), and the most seasoned around 70! What are you waiting for?
In the last two years our club has worked on our process for the registration and starts, and this event was no exception. One of those changes is a tighter start window to help keep the day a little bit shorter. Registration started at 10:30, and by 11 AM, we had about 40 ready to go. While the last few controls were still being set, we sent out the first orienteers – many on WHITE and YELLOW. Everyone used pre-printed maps on 11×17, and all were able to tap into our e-punch system for split times and data collection. By 11:45 we had started everyone.
The event end time was 3 PM, and by 2:45 we were still missing a few, so we started to make phone calls. Turned out they were just enjoying themselves, and a few had teamed up on the last few controls and had a great time! Nothing wrong with that!
Thank you to everyone who helped volunteer and make the day a success. Thanks to Lois Wiesbrook and Mike Avery for running registration, e-punch, and starts. Thanks to Fred Mailey, Bob Boltz, Steve Johnson, Jay Smink, Tony Maletich, Shelby Jones, and Jamie Marino for picking up controls. Much appreciated, and we couldn’t do these types of events without our volunteers.
Join us for more fun at an all new location on Saturday, September 7th, at Allardale Park in Medina. The address is 401 Remsen Rd, Medina, OH 44256. Format is classic-O, with registration starting at 10:30, starts between 11-12.
Sincerely,
Andreas Johansson
Event Director
Course Setter’s note: My sincere apologizes to those running the RED course. Control 46 was miss-placed. I have eliminated that control from the scoring software list for that course.
