Recap
It was a bit chilly in the morning at around 43 degrees and cloudy but still a real good day to get outside for some physical activity and some map navigation fun!
The event was a new venue on a brand-new map produced by Jonathan Boyer and Bob Boltz.
We offered up a full set of courses with a special course for Runners, all designed and set by Jonathan Boyer. An exceptional job well done by Jonathan for creating and producing a new venue for NEOOC.
We had 81 preregistered participants and we were accepting walk up registrations on the day of event, so we were ready for a good turn out. We ended up having 102 Orienteers going out to enjoy the park in groups and as solo runners. Thank you to all who particpated!
Mike Avery and Jay Smink were outstanding at running registration, check in and finishing later for the busy crowd. With the overwhelming walk up response, we actually ran out of maps, so special thanks to Jay for being proactive by bringing his printer from home.
People showed up early, I gave individual instruction and handled staggering the starts as people were ready to go. Richard Davies also gave instruction and helped runners into the start area. Jonathan Boyer was greeting and getting new runners to orienteering excited to go out on their courses. Jonathan also set up a small course in the Start/Finish area, which was well enjoyed by children and orienteers who were out for their first time.
The top three on the respective courses were:
White Course
1st Team Goodman, 2nd Team 3Gen and 3rd Team Repeaters
Yellow Course
1st Team The Izzys, 2nd Team Bugsbunny and 3rd Team Zayd
Runners Course
1st Sarah Blakely, 2nd BeerRun Solo and 3rd Ned Lea
Orange Course
1st Brook Taylor & Kevin Dick, 2nd Ned Sam Huffman and 3rd Brooklyn Burmeister
“A very tight race between Sam & Brooklyn for 2nd & 3rd, both 1st time orienteer runners”
Green Course
1st Shin Shimizu, 2nd Chiori Shimizu and 3rd Team Moobears
Red Course
1st Josh Franek, 2nd Walker Ziewitz and 3rd John Patterson
A link to Official Results and times is posted below. Also, there is a link below to a very good video produced by Jonathan Boyer and Todd Pownell, with their commentary on their separate course checking runs of the Runners course. It contains valuable inights into the thinking processes that elite orienteers go through as they attack a course, and is a very good illustration of the benefits of using Livelox for post-event review and analysis of your runs. For anyone wishing to upload their recorded routes to Livelox, and enjoy replays, those links are also below.
Post event Control Collection was done by Jay Smink, Jonathan Boyer and myself. Mike Avery packed up all equipment for us as we returned.
Thanks to Fred Mailey for doing all behind the scenes work for pre-registration signup and also helping with finishing after running the Green course and coming in 5th on event day.
Todd Pownell, Event Director
