Kent State Masters | Classic Orienteering at Kent State U | Sunday, June 8th

Overview

In conjunction with the Kent State Adventure Center, we are pleased to bring you several of the same Masters level courses as run at the 2024 Pan American Masters Games!  This event will challenge participants with three different courses, each varying in difficulty and distance.

These are Sprint Style courses designed for fast decision making and speed of execution within the main campus areas, but of course, any of the courses can be enjoyed at any pace.  Control locations can be found using a map that will be provided along with an optional compass.  A Classic Orienteering course will challenge you to find all of the controls on the chosen course in the order shown on the map!

We encourage individuals or teams to run multiple courses. The legs within these 3 courses are all different, except for the finish sequence. People can sign up to run their preferred course officially, then do an extra as an unofficial “bonus” run.

New to Orienteering?

Check out any of the following resources to help know what to expect:

Map Notes:

The Kent State map was updated extensively in 2024 before the Pan American Masters Games. It uses the IOF-2023 Sprint mapping standards.

All of the campus’s buildings are represented on the map with their unique sizes, shapes and edges, along with all the the nooks and crannies. (Many of the controls flags are set there!).  The open areas, walkways and parking lots are all there!  Even the art works and sculptures are on the map, designated as man made objects.

Also, there is an extensive wooded area to the south of the main campus that was added to the overall map in 2023.  However, for this event that area will not be used, as we are focusing on the main campus area only.  But in future events, we will incorporate all areas into our course designs, so plan to come back.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of orienteering. It is run entirely by volunteers. Typical volunteer roles in need include course setting, control collection, marketing, and event welcome and registration. If you are interested in helping with this event, or any events in the future, please connect with the event director or send an email to volunteer@neooc.com. Thank you in advance!

Additional Information:

  • Make sure to dress for the weather.  Running shoes or hiking boots make sense for this Sprint style event.  Shorts make sense for warmer weather, since no thorns or underbrush will be encountered.
  • NEOOC volunteers will be on standby at registration to assist beginners and provide some basic instruction.
  • Teams must stay together at all times. Please do not split up while on a course.
  • Please carry a whistle. Three (3) short blasts from a whistle indicates an emergency.
  • All participants must “check out” at the finish area to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for. This applies even if the course is not fully completed.
