2025 Tuscazoar Score | 3-Hour Score | Saturday June 21

The Northeastern Ohio Orienteering club is pleased to be holding another event at the historic Camp Tuscazoar!

Like the most recent iterations, we will be running this as a 3-hour score event – meaning participants have a maximum of 3 hours to locate as many checkpoints as possible, in any order.  For those looking a summer event that will test your on and off-trail navigation skills, this is your chance!

For those looking for an introductory experience, we will have a beginner-friendly course and volunteers to help you get started.

Preregistration deadline: Thursday, June 19, 9pm

No Walk-up Registrations

Details

  • Place: Camp Tuscazoar, Dover, OH
  • Date & Time: June 21, 2025 – Check-in at 10am
  • This will be a score event. Visit as many controls as possible – in any order – within the time limit.
    • 3-Hour Score: For the adventurous! Approximately 40 controls will be placed throughout the full 850-acre park. Expect to encounter challenging terrain with some steep sections. Advanced orienteering skills and good athletic ability will be needed to “clear the course” within the time limit. For those looking for a challenge but with less difficulty, all controls are optional which enables flexibility in how much to tackle. Estimated distance will be 8-10 miles with a mix of on-trail / off-trail to visit 40 controls. Note that the 3-Hour participants will need to have a 50-punch or more ePunch finger stick.
    • Introductory Course: We will have a shorter, beginner friendly course option for those looking for a more introductory experience. Suitable for all age groups, controls will be on the main trails in and around the main camping areas. Choose this option if you are looking for an easier experience. See the New to Orienteering? section below for more information on getting started
  • For both options, each control location will be assigned a point value based on the tens digit in the control code. Controls 110-119 will be worth 10 points, Controls 120-129 will be worth 20 points, and so on. Rankings will be based on total score with tie breakers going to the fastest time.
  • Participants that finish after their respective cutoff time will be subject to a point penalty of 10 points per minute late.
  • Teams of up to 6 are allowed, however all team members must stay together throughout the duration of the event.
  • Livelox will be active for this event. Sign in to the Livelox app on your smartphone to record your route directly to Livelox, or record it on your Garmin or other GPS tracker, and upload it to Livelox later.

Maps

  • The 3-hour score course will have a map scale of 1:8500 and 5 meter contours
  • The introductory course map will have a map scale of 1:5000 for improved readability. 5 meter contours.

Map Notes

Camp Tuscazoar was founded as a Boy Scout camp but is open to the public for camping, hiking, trail running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-trail orienteering. The overall terrain is mixed hardwood forest with rolling hills with many re-entrants and waterways. Various campsites and interesting features can be found throughout the grounds, including some iron mining sites dating back to the early 1800s. Check out the “Centennial Trail” map with 100 marked features that can be done anytime!

A network of trails for various uses winds through this 850 acre park, and part of the orienteering challenge is navigating the sometimes maze-like nature of these trails. As an additional challenge, the trails are continuously being updated and expanded, especially for mountain biking. Some recently added trails may not be found on the map. For successful navigation participants will need to pay close attention to contours and other features. A summary of noteworthy, unmapped trails will be announced on the day of the event.

When staying on trails it will be especially important to stay vigilant for mountain bikers and horseback riders. Please yield to both.
Off-trail terrain at Tuscazoar is moderately dense hardwood forest which has been mapped with various shades of green. Most of the park is mapped light or medium green indicating low visibility from thicker vegetation and slower movement speed. In these areas the terrain may be uneven and sometimes blanked by ferns, but there are very few sections in the park where the vegetation is too dense to pass. In the southern area of the park are some large open fields. Some of these fields may be mowed down, but regardless, the vegetation in these fields is reasonable to pass through.
Tuscazoar is one of our favorite orienteering venues in Northeast Ohio. Don’t miss!

Volunteer Opportunities

The Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of orienteering. It is run entirely by volunteers. Typical volunteer roles in need include course setting, control collection, marketing, and event welcome and registration. If you are interested in helping with this event, or any events in the future, please connect with the event director or send an email to volunteer@neooc.com. Thank you in advance!

Additional Information

  • Make sure to dress for the weather. Long pants and trail running shoes or hiking boots are recommended as a minimum for any weather conditions.
  • NEOOC volunteers will be on standby at registration to assist beginners and provide some basic instruction.
  • Teams must stay together at all times. Please do not split up while on a course.
  • Please carry a whistle. Three (3) short blasts from a whistle indicates an emergency.
  • All participants must “check out” at the finish area to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for. This applies even if the course is not fully completed.
