Orienteering Courses
We welcome anyone who enjoys or is interested in orienteering, from casual walkers to competitive trail runners and seasoned orienteers.
- Beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses will be in the classic cross-country orienteering format (a classic orienteering course requires that you find all of the controls in sequence.)
- Options will be available to all ages and skill levels: nature-lovers, hikers, families, scouts, and experienced orienteers. All are welcome.
- Beginner courses will primarily be on trails and in open fields. Trails on these courses are family-friendly, but some spots may be muddy depending on weather.
- White – 2.7 km, 8 controls
- White-long – 4.7 km, 15 controls – easy orienteering, almost all on trails, designed as an intro to orienteering with a longer distance. Great for hikers and runners interested in trying orienteering but preferring to stick to the trails.
- Yellow – 3.3 km, 11 controls
- Intermediate and Advanced courses will offer opportunities to challenge your skills and explore hidden areas of the park away from trails! Terrain is a good mix of open runnable woods / fields with sections of wetlands and vegetation to navigate.
- Orange – Int – 5.3 km, 14 controls
- Green – Adv – 6.0 km, 17 controls
- Red – Adv – 7.1 km, 18 controls
- Time to complete will vary by course and skill level, but most will take 45-120 minutes to complete.
- All courses can be done solo or as a group (2-6).
- Instruction on map-reading and compass use will be available in the “Intro to Orienteering” class at 10:30am – no prior experience necessary to learn!
- Depending on availability, compasses and electronic timing devices can be borrowed from the club at no cost during the event.
- There will be no water stops on the course, so runners should bring their own water supplies, sufficient for 2-hours.
- SportIdent ePunch equipment and FULL SIZE control flags will be in use
- Livelox will be active for this event. Sign in to the Livelox app on your smartphone to record your route directly to Livelox, or record it on your Garmin or other GPS tracker, and upload it to Livelox later.
