Recap

Chad Roberts from BSA Great Trail Council, Seneca District, Troop 262, regularly brings his scouts to many of our events. When, as coordinator for the District’s 2019 Klondike Derby at Camp Butler, he reached out to NEOOC to have orienteering as one of seven stations for the event, Club members responded with enthusiasm equal to the task of “do your best”. The result was a 17-control, 300-point, sprint score course. The day started with the ground fully snow-covered, and around noon, flurries began and never really stopped. Scout spirit was strong throughout the day, even into the afternoon when fatigue from the many events, and the ever-increasing snow depth, might have fazed a less committed crowd.

On pure orienteering skills, the “Country Boys” patrol from Troop 558, scored 260 gross points, and even with a 50 point penalty for time overage, their net of 210 topped the field. Coming in a close second was the “Walrus” Patrol from Troop 575, with 200 points. Based on the scoring criteria for the Klondike points, the Walruses had the best overall score to add to the points accumulated from the other 6 stations (Fire Building, Patrol Games, X-cut, Archery/Game-On, Knife Throwing, & First Aid). John E. Naizer and Matt Conder of Venturing Crew 2335, while not a full official patrol, did clear the entire course during their run.

NEOOC welcomes families, youth, and youth groups to all of our events. If your youth group has budding orienteers and special functions like this, remember that the Club can potentially provide something like this course for your event at a mapped venue, to help spread the benefits and enjoyment of our challenging sport.
