Recap

It’s spring! The weather was clear and 62 degrees for our orienteering event on 4/22. More than 30 teams and solos enjoyed a brand new orienteering course and map at Richfield Heritage Preserve (aka Camp Crowell Hilaka). The new venue is quite scenic with 2 lakes, a waterfall, and many older and interesting buildings.

The park includes an old mill that was once used to generate electricity. It was engineered by Jim Kirby, widely known by his vacuum cleaner design. The building at the start of our event was historic and beautiful, with a castle like design, complete with shining copper on the roof!

Many of the old buildings are going to be restored and the 501c3 non-profit group “The Friends if Crowell Hilaka” is in need of support; go to www.friendsofcrowellhilaka.org for more information.

Thanks to Christine Naizer for helping to coordinate NEOOC’s ability to hold this event at Richfield Heritage Preserve!

Course designer Bob Boltz designed new maps for this venue and provided us with course choices of White (novice), Yellow, Orange, Green, Red, and Blue. Fred Mailey helped Bob to set the courses.

Howard Montgomery registered orienteers and helped as timer at the finish.  Sanae Rogers was starter and timer and also brought great snacks and drinks. Hazel Barton, Phil Cunningham, Fred Mailey, Bob Boltz, Howard Montgomery, and KJ Rufener picked up controls.

Also, Thanks to everyone that volunteered to clear brush at the Preserve on Saturday 4/21!
